The folks at St. Martin’s Press have offered to let me give away a few copies of The Genizah at the House of Shepher by Tamar Yellin.
This wonderful epic tale covers 150 years and four generations, culminating in a present-day resolution to a mystery that has been passed down throughout the years. It’s a great book to read on your own, or use the Reading Group Gold discussion questions with your book group. Read my full review here.
For a chance to win a copy of the book, leave a comment on this post telling why you’d like to read the book – what appeals to you? history? mystery? the setting? the cover design? If you have a blog, please link back to this post for an additional entry.
Enter by July 31; winners will be selected randomly and announced on August 1. Good luck!

The history and the mystery appeal to me
Thank you for the giveaway!
I have to confess that the cover art made me go, “Ooh!” when I first saw it but honestly the history is what intrigues me the most. From your review it sounds like a book I would really enjoy, since I’ve always had an interest in biblical history.

The mystery and the history combined makes it sound like a fantastic book! It looks really really good.
I’ll link back…if I link from both my blogs can I triple my entries?
Thanks Dawn for the giveaway! I love books like this that span generations:)
I agree w/ Amy (#4) up there. The combined mystery/history always catches my attention. I tried to get an ARC of this through LT & didn’t get so lucky, so now I’ll try again! Thanks for the opportunity! :’)
I posted this at Win a Book, so I hope it brings you lots of entries. But not too many, as this is actually one I’d like to win. It’s been on my wishlist forever (it was originally published by a smaller press that also published one of my favorites, the Last Kabbalist of Lisbon) because my book club reads primarily Jewish-themed books. This fits right in.
Plus, since it shared that same small publisher, I had no doubts of its quality.
I like books based on history and mystery is icing on the cake!
Count me in!
By the way, this post has my book blog URL. The other one has my poetry one!
Please conut me in! I love mystery books, and I’m especially intrigued by the title…
I blogged about this giveaway here:

This book sounds really interesting! I suppose what makes me want to read it is the mystery through generations aspect – any mystery that carries on that long is going to be good! I’ve blogged about the contest here:

I would love to read this book because of my interest in immigration into Israel. I recently read “My Father’s Paradise” and I thought this book would further my understanding. I also requested it through LT’s ER program but wasn’t selected.
Thanks for offering us an opportunity to read this book.
Thanks for sponsoring this giveaway. I’d love to win this book because I adore epic historical novels and the cover reminds me a little of Pillars of the Earth, which is one of my favorites of all time.

I am definitely interested – I’ve heard really good things about this book. I mentioned your giveaway on my blog…

I think that the reason I want to read this, more than the history itself (which I love) but the concept of a mystery that passes from generation to generation. Things that are handed down, and the interaction between multiple generations has always fascinated me.
Also, I will be honest – the cover is very intriguing the art is gorgeous.
I will be linking this to my review blog
Kris

It appeals to me because it is a mystery and I teach and love history.
I really like the generational aspect. Please enter me in the contest. Thanks!

I posted about your giveaway on my other blog, Found Not Lost.
I’ve just dipped a toe into the art of book-reviewing since I joined LibraryThing a month ago. And I’m hooked. I’ve been an avid reader for most of my life, but I had somehow associated the idea of reviewing a book with those god-awful book reports all of us were “assigned” to do as kids.
Thing is, I’m a teacher — high school, history, in a school of non-readers (both my colleagues and most of my students). Our school improvement goal hinges on improving our kids’ ability to read and understand a variety of materials, and a scant few of us are volunteering some time this summer to brainstorm ideas to hook our kids into reading. I’m one of them. . .and the idea of book talks, and contests, and published blog reviews are one way I can think of to both show kids that I myself find this a fun thing to do; as well as tap into my students’ natural competitiveness. Aside from that, I am a rabbi’s daughter who has left the fold theologically (I’m an out-of-the-closet atheist) but is still culturally and educationally Jewish. My knowledge of Biblical history and Torah is extensive, for a layman, and my knowledge of Jewish history and thought is pretty deep.
So on a personal level, I’d love to read about Dr. Shepher’s own struggle with her Judaism and her life, as well as her father’s/grandfather’s conflicts in this area.
And by the by, my father wrote what we believe is the only Judaic burial service for sacred objects to deteriorated to be used. I believe he received approval for it from the local Bet Din.
Thanks for considering my entry!
I love historical fiction and mysteries – sounds like a great combination.
I have been eyeing this book for 2 yrs. It won a Jewish Award. I have a copy that St. Martin has sent me. It is one of the books my Jewish Book Club will be reading including Septembers of Shivaz which I am speedily reading.
I am reading this for the online book blog Everyday I write the book. If not I would visit her blog we will be discussing the book at the end of the month.
For me, I enjoy mysteries & am just now getting into historical fiction…this sounds like a good one for me! I also do like the cover:) I will include your contest on my blog…http://julyso4463.blogspot.com/
It’s the mystery that I like. This does sound good.
since I’m Jewish, I find this book will be very interesting dealing with Torah manuscripts, thanks for the chance to win
What intrigues me the most is that it covers 150 years and 4 generations, and it is an epic tale!! I’d love to read it, and then share it with the girls at work, we do that when we find a book we love.

I really like mysteries, but the history is what draws me to this book.
I like well-written historical fiction, but particularly enjoy books with a present-day main character who discovers more about herself by coming to understand her ancestors. Based on your review, it sounds like Ms. Yellin skillfully moves back and forth in time as she develops the story and her characters.
Thanks for the giveaway.
I’m sheepishly admitting to drooling over the cover art. That said, Booklist’s review – using words like “genealogical history” and “treasure hunt” – has me sold. If nothing else, thanks for the heads up on what looks like an original read.
I cannot resist a good mystery. Thanks for the great giveaway.
Well I do like the cover… (plus I like historical fiction).
This one looks good! Please enter me! Thanks
i love reading new books and mysteries are my fav
First of all the cover design is beautiful. Secondly, I’m intrigued by all the generations it covers…yes, intrigued!

This book appeals to me on many levels — mystery, history, AND cover design! But the hook that really snagged me was in your review where you mention Shula hearing stories of her family through the generations from her aunts and uncles. I don’t have much connection to my own family’s history, and I really feel the lack.
Hope to win this one, and thank you for the chance!
I would love to read this book, it sounds so interesting. I prefer the mystery best. The cover is very pretty too. Thanks for having this giveaway.

Thank You.
Hello again,
I would love to win a copy of this book – it sounds like something I would really enjoy.
Thanks,
LibrarysCat
Please do enter me! I love the idea of a cross generational novel, not to mention the setting of Jerusalem. I have been interested in this particular part of the world for some time now and am always looking to read more about it. I posted about the giveaway on my blog. You can find ithere.
Hi,
I saw your post on Shiraz at Everyday I Write the Book and wanted to comment on it. Of course… then I saw this giveaway and had to toss my hat in. Please include me in the giveaway!
Now, for Septembers ofShiraz. You noted the passage on Parviz and his comment about Rachel. I did noticed that passage as well and actually re-read it several times. As you said, the Amins were not religious, but in times of crisis, many people turn to God in some form. Just like Isaac and how he counted how many times a pair of feet walked by his window. Even was a good day, odd..not so great. It was his way of admitting that there was a higher power.
Thanks for the great contest! I love multi-generational sagas so that’s my real interest in the this book. It’s fascinating to me how themes can run through families from generation to generation.
To All – thanks for entering (and tell your friends, and keep them coming!). I have three new copies of *The Genizah at the House of Shepher* to share; deadline for entry is Thursday 7/31, winners announced on Friday 8/1
Ti – yes, I posted a note back to you about this. I hope to have my review of *The Septembers of Shiraz* up by tomorrow. I’ve needed several days to let the novel “settle” and take in the comments from other readers.
Dawn, I am not sure if you want to send overseas (or if the publisher will let you), but if you do, please enter me for the drawing. I love books that span centuries and generations and I have a weak spot for books by Jewish authors.
Besides, August 1 happens to be my birthday!
Myrthe (and all!) – yes, I will ship the book overseas … I’m happy to share the spoils of the books I’ve been gifted!
the book cover is quite intriguing.
